Bodrum or Fethiye: Which to Choose for Your Aegean Holiday

Bodrum and Fethiye sit on the same stretch of southwest Turkey, but they lead to two quite different holidays and use two different airports. Bodrum is a peninsula of bays with a castle and a busy marina; Fethiye is a harbour town with a lagoon, mountains and ancient tombs nearby. Here is how to tell which one is yours.

Before anything else: two different airports

This choice also decides where you land. Bodrum is reached from Bodrum-Milas Airport (BJV), about 36 km and around 40 minutes from the town. Fethiye is reached from Dalaman Airport (DLM), about 55 km and around 55 minutes away.

So once you have settled on a destination, book your flight into its own airport. Flying into one and staying at the other means a long road journey that most holidaymakers would rather avoid. If you have already booked flights, let the airport point you towards the area, then use the rest of this guide to check that it suits you.

The feel of each place

Bodrum has white-washed houses climbing the hills above a marina full of yachts, with the Castle of St Peter overlooking the waterfront. Beyond the town, the peninsula unfolds into many bays, each with a character of its own, from busy resort strips to calmer corners.

Fethiye is a working harbour town backed by mountains. Its holiday areas spread out towards the Ölüdeniz lagoon, and the countryside around it is dotted with remains of ancient Lycia. It feels more like a base for exploring the landscape than a place of glamour.

If history is on your list

Both reward the curious, in different ways.

  • In Bodrum, the Castle of St Peter houses an underwater archaeology museum, so the town's main monument is also a window into what has been found off this coast.
  • Around Fethiye, the Lycian rock tombs are carved into the cliffs above the town, and the old village of Kayaköy is close by for a quiet, atmospheric walk.

Bodrum gives you one rich site in the middle of town; Fethiye spreads its history across the surrounding hills.

If you want to be outdoors

This is where Fethiye stands out. Babadağ, the mountain above Ölüdeniz, is famous for tandem paragliding down to the beach. The Saklıkent gorge is a popular day out, and the Lycian Way long-distance trail starts near Ölüdeniz for anyone who wants to walk a section of it. Boat trips around the islands in the gulf fill many holiday days too.

Bodrum's outdoor life is centred on the water. With so many bays on the peninsula, it is easy to change beach every few days, and the marina is a starting point for days at sea. Our Bodrum travel guide and Fethiye and Ölüdeniz guide list the options in each place.

If evenings matter as much as days

Bodrum is known for lively nightlife, concentrated in Bodrum town and in Gümbet. Groups of friends who want late nights tend to look here first. That said, plenty of the peninsula's other bays are much quieter, so families and couples can easily stay away from the noise; the Bodrum peninsula areas guide helps you pick a corner.

Fethiye's evenings are generally gentler and built around the harbour, dinner and an early start for the next excursion. Where you stay within the area shapes the mood, as our guide to Çalış, Ölüdeniz and Hisarönü explains.

Road time, trip length and a two-centre idea

The transfer times are close enough that they rarely decide the matter on their own. Around 40 minutes from the airport to Bodrum town against around 55 minutes from Dalaman to Fethiye is a difference of a quarter of an hour, which disappears into the first afternoon of a week-long holiday. Where you stay within each area matters more: a bay at the far end of the Bodrum peninsula, or a village up the hill from Fethiye, will add time either way, so check the route page for your exact hotel.

Length of stay is a more useful clue. On a short break, Bodrum lets you combine beach, castle and an evening out without long excursions. Fethiye shines when you have enough days to fit in Saklıkent, a boat trip, a walk on the trail and a morning on the lagoon. Some travellers with two weeks are tempted to see both. That is possible, but plan it as a proper two-centre trip with a separate road transfer between them, rather than a day trip, because the two areas are not neighbours.

Who usually ends up where

  • Friends after nightlife and a marina scene: Bodrum town or Gümbet.
  • Couples who want variety of bays and stylish streets: Bodrum's peninsula.
  • Active travellers, walkers and adrenaline seekers: Fethiye, for Babadağ, Saklıkent and the Lycian Way.
  • Families who like boat days and nature trips: Fethiye works well; Bodrum's quieter bays do too.
  • History lovers: both, depending on whether you prefer a museum castle or rock tombs and a ghost village.

Your transfer from either airport

We meet arrivals at both airports. The driver waits with a name sign, tracks your flight and waits for free if it is late, then drives your group alone to the door, with no stops for other passengers. Live prices are on the route pages for Bodrum-Milas Airport to Bodrum and Dalaman Airport to Fethiye, and each destination has its own page: Bodrum transfers and Fethiye transfers.

Choose a Minivan for 1 to 6 passengers, a VIP Mercedes-Benz Vito for up to 7, or a Mercedes Sprinter for 8 to 16. The price is fixed per vehicle, there is no night surcharge or luggage fee, child seats are free, and you pay in the vehicle with free cancellation.
