Side is one of the best-loved resorts on the Turkish Riviera because it combines beaches with genuine ancient history. The old town sits on a small peninsula where Roman and Hellenistic ruins stand among shops and restaurants, and the columns of the Temple of Apollo rise right beside the sea, a classic sunset view. A large ancient theatre and stretches of the old city walls are close by.

On either side of the peninsula, long sandy beaches run east and west, lined with hotels of every size. Side attracts families, couples and history lovers alike, and many guests return year after year for the mix of easy beach days and evening walks through the old town.

The distance is roughly 65 km and the transfer normally takes about 75 minutes. The route follows the main coastal highway east, past the turn-offs for Belek and Serik, and then leaves the highway near Manavgat towards the coast.

When you land:

• We track your flight, so the driver adjusts to the actual arrival time.
• After baggage claim, your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a sign showing your name.
• He helps with your luggage and takes you to the vehicle.
• The ride is private, with no other passengers and no stops at other hotels.

The old town of Side itself is largely closed to regular traffic. If you are staying inside the peninsula, the driver takes you to the nearest point a car can reach and helps you from there.

Side is less a single town than a string of resort areas. West of the peninsula lie Kumköy, Çolaklı and, further out, Evrenseki, mostly with large beach hotels. East of the old town are Sorgun, with its pine forest by the sea, and Titreyengöl, beside a small lake. A few smaller hotels and guesthouses sit within the old town and close to it.

Guests often stay at hotels such as Barut Hemera, Side Star Elegance or Sueno Hotels Beach Side, and we drive to any hotel, apartment or villa in the area. Outside the old town, the driver brings you right to your hotel entrance.

Besides the ruins in town, Side is a convenient base for some of the region's most popular outings by private car:

• The Manavgat waterfall, a wide, low waterfall a short drive inland.
• Boat trips on the Manavgat river, which flows out to the sea near Side.
• Aspendos, famous for its remarkably preserved Roman theatre.
• The Green Canyon, a turquoise reservoir lake in the Taurus Mountains.
• Köprülü Canyon, popular for rafting.

On departure day, aim to be at the airport about 2.5 to 3 hours before an international flight, and check your airline's advice. With a drive of around 75 minutes, a pick-up about 4 to 4.5 hours before departure gives you a comfortable margin. For a 13:00 flight, for example, we would usually collect you at around 08:30 to 09:00.
