Alanya or Fethiye? An Honest Guide to Picking Your Resort

Alanya and Fethiye both lie on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, but they are far apart and feel quite different. Alanya spreads along long sandy beaches below a castle; Fethiye is a harbour town ringed by a lagoon, a gorge and mountains. This comparison looks at beaches, sights, evenings and airports to help you choose.

Far apart on the map, different in mood

People sometimes treat the Turkish coast as one long resort strip, but Alanya and Fethiye sit at opposite ends of the region and use different airports. Alanya lies on the eastern part of the Antalya coast; Fethiye is further west, closer to Dalaman. Choosing between them is less about which is nicer and more about which kind of holiday you have in mind.

A rough way to frame it: Alanya suits travellers who want sand underfoot, a lively town and a long coastline of resort villages to choose from. Fethiye suits travellers who want scenery and outings, with a lagoon, ruins and mountain paths within reach. There is overlap, and both offer boat trips and beaches, but the emphasis is different.

On the beach

Alanya is a beach destination first. Long sandy beaches run on both sides of the town, and Cleopatra Beach, the name most visitors recognise, lies right beside the centre. East and west of the town, a chain of resort villages stretches along the shore, so you can stay in a busy spot or somewhere calmer while still being on the sand.

Fethiye is more about bays and water than one long strand. Its signature view is the sheltered lagoon at Ölüdeniz, a short drive from town, and boat trips from the harbour stop at islands and coves around Fethiye Bay for swimming. If a wide sandy beach outside the door matters most to you, Alanya has the edge; if you like a different swimming spot each day, Fethiye's boat trips appeal.

Landmarks and history

Both places have history you can see from the street.

  • Alanya: a castle stands on the rocky peninsula above the town, and down by the harbour is the Red Tower. Damlataş cave, close to Cleopatra Beach, is an easy visit.
  • Fethiye: Lycian rock tombs are carved into the cliff above the town. Kayaköy, an abandoned village of stone houses on a hillside, makes a quiet, atmospheric outing.

Alanya's sights are mostly gathered in and around the town, which makes them simple to see on foot or in a short hop. Fethiye's are scattered across the surrounding countryside, so they lend themselves to half-day trips.

Days out and active plans

For travellers who like to be busy, Fethiye has a strong list:

  • a tandem paragliding flight from Babadağ, landing by the shore at Ölüdeniz;
  • wading through the narrow rock walls of Saklıkent gorge;
  • a stretch of the Lycian Way, the long-distance footpath that starts near Ölüdeniz;
  • island boat trips around the bay.

Alanya's outings are gentler and closer to town: harbour boat trips along the rocky coast, a walk up to the castle, a visit to the cave and plenty of time on the beach. Our Alanya travel guide and Fethiye and Ölüdeniz travel guide cover each place in more detail.

After dark

Evenings in Alanya tend to be livelier, especially in the centre and around the harbour, with plenty going on late into the night. Fethiye's evenings are generally more relaxed, centred on the harbour and dinner. If you want a quieter Alanya stay, the resort villages along the coast are calmer than the town; if you want a bit more buzz in Fethiye, stay close to the town centre and harbour.

Airports and transfer times

This is where the two differ most in practice.

For Alanya you have two airports. Gazipaşa-Alanya Airport (GZP) is about 40 km away, around 50 minutes by road, which makes it the quickest arrival. Antalya Airport (AYT) is about 125 km away, roughly two hours, and is the natural choice if your flight lands there. Live prices are on the Gazipaşa to Alanya route page and the Antalya Airport to Alanya route page.

For Fethiye, fly into Dalaman Airport (DLM). Fethiye town is about 55 km, around 55 minutes; Ölüdeniz is about 63 km, around 70 minutes. See the Dalaman Airport to Fethiye route page for the vehicle prices.

Who should pick which

  • Beach-first families: Alanya, for the long sandy beaches and short distances to the sights.
  • Walkers and adventure lovers: Fethiye, for paragliding, the gorge and the Lycian Way.
  • Groups of friends wanting nightlife: Alanya town.
  • Couples after scenery and quiet dinners: Fethiye or Ölüdeniz.
  • Anyone on a short break: whichever is closer to a convenient flight; Gazipaşa for Alanya and Dalaman for Fethiye both keep the drive under about an hour to the towns.

One booking, either coast
