Alanya at a glance

Alanya sits on the eastern part of the Turkish Riviera, where the Taurus Mountains come close to the sea. The town wraps around a steep rocky peninsula that pushes out into the Mediterranean. On top of it stands the castle; at its foot, on the eastern side, is the harbour with the Red Tower; to the west lies Cleopatra Beach, and to the east the long beach that runs past the town towards Mahmutlar.

Alanya works well for very different trips. Families like the long, gently sloping beaches and the easy promenade. Couples and friends come for the harbour evenings, the boat trips and the views from the castle. In spring and autumn it is a pleasant base for walking around the old quarter and heading inland to the mountains. Because almost everything worth seeing is concentrated around the peninsula, you can cover the main sights in two or three relaxed days and still have plenty of beach time.

Alanya Castle and the peninsula

Alanya Castle (Alanya Kalesi) is the symbol of the town. Its walls follow the ridge of the peninsula and climb around the rock, enclosing old houses, a small mosque, cisterns and the remains of earlier fortifications. Much of what you see dates from the Seljuk period in the 13th century, when Alanya was an important port and winter residence.

The real reward is the view. From the upper parts of the castle you look down on both beaches at once, over the harbour and the town, and on clear days along the coast to the mountains. Late afternoon is a good time to go: the light is softer and the heat less intense.

There are three ways up:

  • Cable car – there is a cable car from near Damlataş/Cleopatra Beach up to the castle area, which saves the steep climb.
  • By road – a winding road leads up the peninsula, so a taxi, bus or private car can take you close to the top.
  • On foot – a steep walk through the old residential lanes, rewarding but tiring in summer; take water and good shoes.

Many visitors go up by cable car or car and walk back down through the old quarter towards the harbour.

Red Tower, old shipyard and the harbour

At the eastern foot of the peninsula, the Red Tower (Kızıl Kule) guards the harbour. This large octagonal brick tower was built by the Seljuks in the 13th century to protect the port and the shipyard, and it is the most photographed building in Alanya. A path and section of wall link it with the old shipyard (Tersane), a row of vaulted stone galleries opening directly onto the sea, where ships were once built and repaired.

From the tower, the harbour promenade leads into the town centre, lined with cafés, restaurants and the boats that offer trips around the peninsula. In the evening this is the liveliest part of Alanya: the castle walls are lit up above you and the promenade fills with people.

Boat trips leave from the harbour and circle the peninsula, stopping at the sea caves cut into the cliffs, such as the well-known Pirates' Cave and Lovers' Cave, often with a swim stop. It is the easiest way to see the rocky side of the peninsula that you cannot reach on foot. Compare a few boats at the harbour and choose the length of trip that suits you.

Cleopatra Beach and Damlataş cave

Cleopatra Beach runs west from the peninsula for a few kilometres. It is known for its fine, light sand and clear water, and it is the beach most people picture when they think of Alanya. The part closest to the peninsula is the busiest; walk further west for more space.

Right next to the beach, at the foot of the peninsula, is Damlataş cave, a small dripstone cave with stalactites and stalagmites. It was discovered by chance in the 20th century and is a short, easy visit that fits well into a beach day. The cable car to the castle starts in the same area, so you can combine cave, beach and castle in one outing.

East of the peninsula, Keykubat Beach continues along the town towards Oba, Tosmur and Kestel. It is wide and long, with a promenade behind it, and usually feels a little less crowded than Cleopatra Beach.

Dim river valley: a cooler day out

When the coast gets hot, locals head inland to the Dim river valley (Dimçayı), a short drive east of the town. The river comes down from the Taurus Mountains, and along its banks there are restaurants with wooden platforms set over or right beside the water. You sit in the shade with your feet close to the cold stream – a classic Alanya summer afternoon.

The valley is green and noticeably cooler than the beach, which makes it a good option for families with children or for a break between beach days. Combine it with a drive further up into the mountains if you want more scenery.

Where to stay in and around Alanya

  • Town centre – walk to Cleopatra Beach, the harbour and the cable car; ideal if you want restaurants and evenings out.
  • Oba and Tosmur – just east of the centre, calmer, close to Keykubat Beach and the Dim river.
  • Kestel and Mahmutlar – further east, long beaches and many apartments, popular for longer stays; see Antalya Airport to Mahmutlar.
  • Konaklı, Avsallar and Okurcalar – west of Alanya on the road towards Side, mostly beach resorts and all-inclusive hotels; quieter, with Alanya town a drive away.

Getting to Alanya from the airport

You have two airport options:

  • Antalya Airport (AYT) – the main airport with the most flights; Alanya is ≈ 125 km away, about ≈ 2 h by road. See Antalya Airport to Alanya.
  • Gazipaşa-Alanya Airport (GZP) – much closer, ≈ 40 km / ≈ 40 min to the centre, but with fewer flights. See Gazipaşa Airport transfer.

Times are typical; high-season traffic and town traffic can add time. With a private transfer the driver meets you in arrivals with a name sign, tracks your flight and waits free of charge if it is delayed. The price is fixed per vehicle, not per person, and agreed before the trip – no night surcharge and no luggage fee. Choose a Minivan (1–6), VIP Mercedes-Benz Vito (1–7) or Mercedes Sprinter (8–16), ask for free child seats, and book your return at the same time via WhatsApp or the booking form. Payment is in the vehicle.
