Bodrum sits at the tip of a rugged peninsula in south-west Turkey, where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean. In antiquity this was Halicarnassus, home town of the historian Herodotus and site of the Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Today the town is known for white cube houses with blue shutters, bougainvillea, a busy yacht harbour and a long tradition of building wooden gulets.
The peninsula around it is not one resort but a ring of separate bays and villages. Where you stay shapes your holiday far more than in many other Turkish destinations, so it is worth reading about the areas before you book.
