Çeşme or Alaçatı: what is the difference?

They are neighbours on the same peninsula, but they feel different. Çeşme is the working town: a harbour, a seafront promenade, a castle in the middle of it all and a ferry port. It spreads out along the coast to the beach area of Ilıca, where the sand is fine and the water stays shallow for a long way.

Alaçatı is a village a short drive inland and to the south-east. It is all about atmosphere: narrow lanes of pale stone houses with coloured shutters, boutique guesthouses, cafés and small shops, and a row of old windmills on the hill above. South of the village, the wide bay of Alaçatı is one of Turkey's best-known windsurfing spots.

Plenty of visitors stay in one and spend evenings in the other. Pick Çeşme or Ilıca for easy beach days with children; pick Alaçatı if you want to walk out of your door into a lively village.

Çeşme town: the castle and the harbour

Çeşme Castle is the landmark you will see first. It is an Ottoman fortress standing right by the harbour, and its walls give a good view over the bay and the town roofs. In front of it is the main square and the statue of Cezayirli Gazi Hasan Paşa with his lion, a familiar photo stop.

From the castle, the old streets lead uphill past an old caravanserai and small mosques, while the marina and the promenade run along the water. In the evening the harbour fills with people walking, eating ice cream and watching the boats.

Çeşme's port also has ferries to the Greek island of Chios, which lies close to the Turkish coast. If you are thinking about a day trip, check the current schedule and the travel document rules for your nationality well before you go.

Ilıca and the other beaches

Ilıca is the long beach that most people picture when they think of Çeşme: pale sand, clear water and a gentle slope, which makes it comfortable for small children. The area is also known for its thermal springs, and several hotels along this stretch are built around that tradition.

Other beaches worth knowing:

  • Boyalık – a bay between Çeşme and Ilıca, often a little calmer.
  • Altınkum – a series of sandy coves south-west of Çeşme, with a more natural feel.
  • Pırlanta and Ayayorgi – smaller bays close to town; Ayayorgi is known for beach clubs.

The water on this peninsula comes from the open Aegean, so it is usually cooler and clearer than you might expect in midsummer. A windy day is normal here, and it keeps the heat bearable.

Alaçatı: stone houses, windmills and windsurfing

Alaçatı's old centre is small enough to explore on foot in an hour or two, though most people take longer because of the cafés. The stone houses date from the time when the village was home to a large Greek-speaking community; today many have been restored as guesthouses and restaurants. The windmills on the ridge at the entrance to the village are the classic sunset spot.

The reason the windmills were built is the same reason windsurfers come today: a steady northerly wind blows across the peninsula through much of the summer. Alaçatı bay has shallow water far out from the shore, which makes it popular with beginners and with kitesurfers. Several schools along the shore rent equipment and give lessons.

In spring the village holds a well-known herb festival, celebrating the wild greens used in local Aegean cooking. Whatever the season, try olive-oil dishes and the herbs that local cooks are proud of.

Drive times from İzmir Airport (ADB)

İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport is the gateway to the whole peninsula. The road west is a fast motorway, so the drive is straightforward:

  • İzmir Airport → Çeşme: ≈ 85 km, ≈ 70 min
  • İzmir Airport → Alaçatı: ≈ 78 km, ≈ 65 min
  • İzmir Airport → İzmir centre: ≈ 18 km, ≈ 30 min

On summer weekends the road towards the peninsula gets busy, as many people from İzmir have holiday homes here, so allow some extra time on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. See the route pages İzmir Airport to Çeşme and İzmir Airport to Alaçatı for vehicle options and live prices.

Your private transfer from İzmir Airport

After baggage claim, your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign. We track your flight, so if it lands late the driver adjusts and the waiting time is free. The car takes you door to door, straight to your hotel or rental house – useful in Alaçatı, where the narrow lanes can be confusing for a first-time visitor.

The price is fixed per vehicle, not per person, and agreed before the trip. It does not change for traffic, a night arrival or extra luggage, and there is no prepayment: you pay in the vehicle. Choose a Minivan for up to 6 people, a VIP Mercedes-Benz Vito for up to 7, or a Mercedes Sprinter for groups of 8 to 16. Child seats are free on request, and windsurf or kite bags are fine if you tell us when booking.

You can book 24/7 on WhatsApp or through the booking form, and add the return trip at the same time.

Combining Çeşme with Ephesus or Urla

The peninsula works well as part of a wider Aegean trip. On the way back towards İzmir, the town of Urla is known for its vineyards and relaxed restaurants. Further south, the ancient city of Ephesus near Selçuk and the resort town of Kuşadası are both within reach of İzmir Airport too – read our Ephesus and Kuşadası guide if you want to add a few days there.

If you plan a two-centre holiday, tell us both addresses when you book and we will quote the transfer between them as well.
