How many days, and where to stay

İzmir is Turkey's third-largest city, wrapped around a deep bay on the Aegean coast. It feels very different from a resort: people walk, sit in cafés along the water and stay out late on warm evenings. Most visitors find that two to three days cover the city itself comfortably, and an extra day or two lets you add the coast or the ancient sites.

For a short stay, base yourself in Alsancak or around Konak. Both are close to the seafront, so you can do most sightseeing on foot. Alsancak suits people who want restaurants and evening life on the doorstep; Konak puts you right next to the bazaar and the clock tower. Business travellers often pick hotels near the bay or close to the fair and office districts, depending on where their meetings are.

The Kordon and Alsancak

The Kordon is İzmir's long seafront promenade, running along the bay towards Alsancak. A wide strip of grass, benches and cafés faces the water, and at sunset it fills with locals walking, cycling or simply sitting on the lawn. It is the easiest way to understand the city: start in the late afternoon and walk until the light goes.

Behind the Kordon, Alsancak is a grid of lively streets with cafés, meyhanes and small shops. Look out for the old Levantine houses with tall windows and bay fronts — a reminder of the merchant families who lived here. Try the local snacks while you walk: boyoz, a flaky pastry usually eaten at breakfast with a boiled egg, and kumru, a toasted sandwich that is an İzmir favourite.

Konak Square and Kemeraltı Bazaar

Konak Square is the city's best-known meeting point. Its ornate clock tower is İzmir's symbol, and the small tiled mosque beside it makes a classic photo with the bay behind. From here it is a short walk into Kemeraltı, a historic market district of narrow lanes, old inns and courtyards.

  • Wander without a plan: spice stalls, textiles, copperware, jewellery and street food sit side by side.
  • Stop for a Turkish coffee in one of the old courtyards of the historic inns.
  • On the edge of the bazaar you can see the remains of the ancient Agora of Smyrna.

Kemeraltı is busiest around midday and on weekends. Go in the morning if you prefer calmer lanes, and keep valuables close as you would in any crowded market.

The Asansör and Kadifekale: İzmir's best views

The Asansör in the Karataş neighbourhood is a historic lift built in the early 1900s to connect the lower streets with the hilltop above. Ride it to the upper terrace for a wide view over the bay — it is especially beautiful in the evening. The streets around Karataş are worth a short walk too.

Kadifekale, the hill above the old city, has the remains of a castle and one of the widest panoramas of İzmir. The streets up the hill are steep, so most visitors go by car rather than on foot. Combine Kadifekale with Kemeraltı in one half day, or save it for late afternoon when the light over the bay is softest.

Day trips by private car: Çeşme, Urla, Ephesus and Şirince

İzmir is a perfect base for day trips, and a private car with driver lets you set your own pace. Agree the pick-up and return times when booking; if you want several stops in one day, tell us when booking and we will tell you what is possible.

  • Çeşme and Alaçatı — at the western tip of the peninsula: stone houses, windmills, boutique cafés and clear water. Read our Çeşme and Alaçatı travel guide.
  • Urla — on the way to Çeşme, known for vineyards, farm-to-table restaurants and a charming old centre.
  • Ephesus and Şirince — the great ancient city lies next to Selçuk, south of İzmir, and the hillside village of Şirince is just above it. Our Ephesus and Kuşadası guide has the details.

In summer, start early: ancient sites have little shade, and the coast roads get busier in the afternoon.

From İzmir Airport to the city

İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) lies south of the city, ≈18 km or ≈30 minutes from the centre in normal traffic. With a private transfer your driver waits in arrivals with a name sign, follows your flight and waits free of charge if it is delayed. The price is fixed per vehicle, not per person, and does not change for traffic, night arrivals or luggage.

See the live prices on the İzmir Airport to city centre page. If you are heading straight to the coast, there are also routes such as İzmir Airport to Çeşme and İzmir Airport to Selçuk. You can book the return trip at the same time.

Business trips to İzmir

İzmir is a major business and trade-fair city, and many visitors combine meetings with an evening on the Kordon. A pre-booked private transfer takes the stress out of a tight schedule: you know the price before the trip, the driver is waiting when you land, and you pay in the vehicle in cash or by card if agreed in advance — there is no prepayment.

For teams, choose a Minivan (1–6 people), a VIP Mercedes-Benz Vito (1–7) or a Mercedes Sprinter (8–16). Requests via WhatsApp or the booking form are answered with a fixed-price quote within 1 minute, 24/7, and cancellation is free.
