The Bodrum peninsula at a glance

Bodrum is not one resort but a whole peninsula of bays, each with its own character. The south coast is warmer and livelier, the north coast greener and more exclusive, and the western tip is known for wind and sunsets. Milas-Bodrum Airport (BJV) lies north-east of the peninsula, so all areas are within about an hour by private car:

  • Bodrum town: ≈ 36 km, ≈ 40 min
  • Gümbet: ≈ 39 km, ≈ 43 min
  • Ortakent: ≈ 40 km, ≈ 44 min
  • Türkbükü: ≈ 40 km, ≈ 44 min
  • Bitez: ≈ 42 km, ≈ 46 min
  • Gündoğan: ≈ 44 km, ≈ 48 min
  • Yalıkavak: ≈ 48 km, ≈ 52 min
  • Turgutreis: ≈ 52 km, ≈ 56 min
  • Akyarlar: ≈ 58 km, ≈ 62 min

These are typical times. In July and August, roads into Bodrum town and around the busier bays can be slow, especially in the evening.

Bodrum town and Gümbet: for nightlife and city life

Bodrum town is the heart of the peninsula. The medieval Bodrum Castle (the Castle of St Peter) stands between two bays, the marina is lined with yachts and traditional gulets, and the streets behind the seafront are full of shops, restaurants and bars. The remains of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, are also here. Choose town if you want to walk everywhere and enjoy evenings out; the beaches themselves are small.

Gümbet is the lively bay right next to town, with a long strip of bars, clubs and water sports. It suits young groups and friends who want sun by day and music by night. Light sleepers and families with small children usually prefer somewhere quieter.

Bitez and Ortakent: calm bays for families

Bitez is a sheltered, calmer bay west of Gümbet, with a seafront promenade of cafés and restaurants and shallow water near the shore. Its steady breeze also makes it a gentle spot to try windsurfing. It is close enough to Bodrum town for an evening out, yet it feels relaxed.

Ortakent has one of the longest beaches on the peninsula, with sand and plenty of space even in summer. Many family-friendly hotels and holiday homes line the shore. If you want a classic beach holiday with children, Bitez and Ortakent are easy choices.

Turgutreis and Akyarlar: sunsets and wind in the west

Turgutreis, on the western tip, is a real town with its own marina, a long seafront and wide views of the Greek islands. It is famous for its sunsets and offers everyday shops and restaurants, which makes it practical for longer stays and families.

Akyarlar, in the south-west, is smaller and quieter, with sandy coves and reliable wind that draws kitesurfers and windsurfers. It is the farthest of these areas from the airport, at about an hour, but many guests find the calm atmosphere worth it.

Yalıkavak, Türkbükü and Gündoğan: the north coast

Yalıkavak is known for its large, upscale marina, designer shops, fine dining and old windmills on the hills. It suits couples and travellers looking for a stylish base. Türkbükü is the peninsula's beach-club bay, where wooden piers replace sandy beaches and the summer scene is glamorous. Gündoğan, the next bay along, is quiet and green, popular with families and visitors who want swimming piers and a slower pace.

The north coast is greener and often a little cooler in the evenings. For hotel ideas, see our best hotels in Bodrum post, and for beaches and sights read the Bodrum travel guide.

Which Bodrum area suits you?

  • Nightlife and walking everywhere: Bodrum town or Gümbet.
  • Families with children: Bitez, Ortakent, Gündoğan or Turgutreis.
  • Couples and upscale stays: Yalıkavak or Türkbükü.
  • Windsurfing and kitesurfing: Akyarlar or Bitez.
  • Sunsets and a real town feel: Turgutreis.
  • Shortest airport transfer: Bodrum town, Gümbet, Ortakent or Türkbükü (around 40–44 min).

If you plan to explore several bays, a central base such as Bitez or Ortakent keeps all distances short. Remember that the peninsula is hilly and many roads between the bays wind over the ridges, so even short distances can take a while. Staying near the beach you will use most is usually more relaxing than planning to cross the peninsula every day.
