Antalya or Bodrum? How to Decide Where to Base Your Holiday

Antalya and Bodrum both sit on Turkey's south-west coast, yet they are around six hours apart by road and suit different kinds of trips. One is a long Mediterranean strip of resort areas, the other an Aegean peninsula of bays. This guide sets out what each offers so you can match the place to your plans.

First, a reality check on distance

People sometimes picture Antalya and Bodrum as neighbours because both appear on the same stretch of the Turkish map. In practice the drive between them is about 433 km, which takes around 365 minutes, so roughly six hours on the road. That is not a day trip. It means you are really choosing between two separate holidays, each with its own airport:

  • Antalya Airport (AYT) for the Antalya coast: Lara, Belek, Side, Kemer and Alanya.
  • Bodrum-Milas Airport (BJV) for Bodrum town and the bays of the Bodrum peninsula.

If you cannot decide and have the time, there is a third option, covered further down: stay in both and fly into one airport and home from the other.

The Antalya coast: many resorts, one airport

What people call "Antalya" on a holiday booking is usually not the city itself but a long coastline of resort areas spread east and west of it. Each has its own feel, and all of them are served by the same airport. A few of the main names and how far they are from arrivals:

  • Lara, just east of the city, about 14 km and 20 minutes away.
  • Belek, about 33 km and 40 minutes.
  • Kemer, to the west where the mountains meet the sea, about 58 km and 70 minutes.
  • Side, further east, about 65 km and 75 minutes.

The region is known for its many large all-inclusive resorts, which makes it a straightforward choice if you want to arrive, check in and have most things on site. Beaches along this coast are a mix of sand and pebble depending on the area, and the Taurus mountains rise behind the shoreline, so the backdrop is green and steep rather than flat.

Away from the beach there is plenty of history. The ancient theatre at Aspendos, the ruins of Perge and the mountain city of Termessos are all within reach, and in Antalya city the old quarter of Kaleiçi has narrow lanes around the old harbour. Families weighing up areas here can start with our guide to the family-friendly parts of Antalya.

Bodrum: a peninsula of different bays

Bodrum works on a smaller, more compact scale. The town is built around a harbour and marina, with white-washed houses climbing the slopes and the Castle of St Peter standing over the water. The castle houses a museum of underwater archaeology, which is a good reason to spend a morning in town even if you stay elsewhere.

Beyond the town the peninsula breaks into a series of bays, and each has a different character: some lively, some calm, some with a marina. That variety lets you pick a mood as much as a location. Evenings in Bodrum town and nearby Gümbet are known for lively nightlife, while other bays are better suited to a slower pace. For a fuller picture of the sights and beaches, see our Bodrum travel guide.

The airport sits inland, and the drive to Bodrum town is about 36 km, roughly 40 minutes.

Matching the place to the trip

Rather than asking which is nicer, ask what you want your days to look like. A few common situations:

  • You want a big resort with everything in one place. The Antalya coast has many large all-inclusive properties across several areas, and short transfers to Lara and Belek.
  • You want to mix beach days with ancient sites. Antalya puts Aspendos, Perge and Termessos within day-trip distance, plus Kaleiçi in the city.
  • You want harbour evenings and a choice of bays. Bodrum's marina, castle and varied peninsula suit travellers who like to move around and eat out.
  • Nightlife is high on the list. Bodrum town and Gümbet are known for it; on the Antalya side you would pick your area carefully.
  • Mountains as a backdrop. The Taurus range behind the Antalya coast gives that region its look.

Neither answer is wrong. They are simply built for different holidays.

Why not both? Splitting the trip

With a week or more, some travellers split their stay: a few nights on the Antalya coast, then a move to Bodrum, or the other way round. The cleanest way to do it is to book flights into one airport and out of the other, so you never have to backtrack.

For the middle leg you can take a private transfer straight from your hotel to the next one. The Antalya Airport to Bodrum route page shows the vehicles and live prices, and our Antalya to Bodrum transfer guide explains how the long drive works, including planning stops along the way. If you are unsure which airport to land at, read our guide to choosing an airport on the Turkish coast.

Getting from the airport to your hotel

Whichever base you choose, we drive from all five airports we serve, including Antalya and Bodrum-Milas. Every transfer is private: the vehicle carries only your group and goes straight to your door with no stops at other hotels.

On arrival your driver waits at arrivals with a name sign. We track your flight, so if it is delayed the driver simply waits, at no extra charge. For Bodrum, the Bodrum-Milas Airport to Bodrum route lists the options, and the Bodrum transfers page covers the wider peninsula. For anywhere on the Antalya coast, start from our airport transfer overview.
