Antalya or Fethiye? A Practical Guide to Choosing Your Coast

Antalya and Fethiye share the same turquoise coastline, but they differ in scale, pace and the airport you fly into. The Antalya region is a long chain of resort areas with large hotels; Fethiye is a harbour town with a lagoon, mountains and smaller places to stay. Here is what to weigh before you book.

Scale is the real difference

If you remember one thing from this comparison, make it this: the two places operate at different sizes. The Antalya region stretches along the coast in both directions from the city, with resort areas such as Lara, Belek, Side, Kemer and Alanya, and many large all-inclusive resorts. Fethiye centres on a single harbour town, and its hotels tend to be smaller in scale.

Neither is a drawback in itself. A large resort gives you pools, restaurants and entertainment without leaving the grounds. A smaller hotel in Fethiye or Ölüdeniz usually means you spend more time out and about, eating in town or heading off on a boat or a hike. Think about which rhythm suits your group before looking at anything else.

Which airport, and how long the ride takes

Each coast has its own airport, and that shapes the first and last day of your trip.

For the Antalya region you land at Antalya Airport (AYT). Transfers to the nearer resort areas are short: Lara is about 14 km and around 20 minutes, Belek about 33 km and 40 minutes, and Kemer about 58 km and 70 minutes.

For Fethiye the usual gateway is Dalaman Airport (DLM). The town is about 55 km away, roughly 55 minutes, and Ölüdeniz is about 63 km, around 70 minutes. See the Dalaman Airport to Fethiye route for vehicles and live prices.

It is also possible to reach Fethiye from Antalya Airport. That drive is about 230 km and takes around 200 minutes, so it is worth it mainly when flights into Antalya fit your plans much better. The Antalya Airport to Fethiye route page and our Antalya to Fethiye transfer guide explain that option.

Days outdoors: Fethiye's strong suit

Fethiye attracts many visitors who want activity as much as sunbathing. Around the town you will find:

  • Ölüdeniz lagoon, the sheltered stretch of water that appears on so many postcards.
  • Babadağ, the mountain above Ölüdeniz used for tandem paragliding.
  • Saklıkent gorge, a narrow canyon inland.
  • Island boat trips leaving from the harbour.
  • The start of the Lycian Way, a long-distance walking route that begins near Ölüdeniz.

If your idea of a holiday includes a different outing most days, this concentration of things to do close to town is a strong reason to pick Fethiye. Our Fethiye and Ölüdeniz travel guide goes into more detail.

History on both coasts

Both areas suit travellers who like ruins, in different ways. Near Fethiye you can see Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliffs and walk through Kayaköy, an abandoned village of stone houses on a hillside. Around Antalya the sites are larger ancient cities: the theatre at Aspendos, the ruins of Perge and Termessos high in the mountains. In Antalya city itself, the old quarter of Kaleiçi makes an easy half-day out.

So if history matters, the question is less which has more and more which style appeals: dramatic tombs and a ghost village, or classical cities and an old town.

Who tends to prefer which

  • Families wanting an easy, all-in-one stay often lean towards the Antalya region, with its big resorts and short transfers from the airport.
  • Walkers, paragliders and boat-trip fans often lean towards Fethiye, where those activities are close to the town.
  • Couples can be happy in either: a resort area on the Antalya coast, or a smaller hotel in Fethiye with evenings by the harbour.
  • Groups with mixed interests may like the Antalya region's range of resort areas, each with a slightly different feel.

These are tendencies, not rules. Plenty of families love Fethiye and plenty of hikers base themselves near Antalya.

Seeing both in one holiday

Because the two coasts are about 200 minutes apart by road, a split trip is realistic. A common pattern is to fly into Antalya, spend a few nights in a resort, then transfer to Fethiye and fly home from Dalaman, or the reverse. This is often called an open-jaw holiday, and we explain how to plan one in our open-jaw guide for Antalya and Dalaman. For help deciding where to land, see which airport to choose for the Turkish coast.

How the transfer works with us

We cover both Antalya and Dalaman airports, so one booking can handle each leg of your trip. All transfers are private, door to door, with no other passengers and no stops at other hotels. Your driver waits at arrivals holding a name sign, and because we track flights, a delay simply means the driver waits for you at no extra cost.

Choose the vehicle by group size: a Minivan for 1 to 6 people, a VIP Mercedes-Benz Vito for 1 to 7, or a Mercedes Sprinter for 8 to 16. The price is per vehicle, not per person, and is shown in the live table on each route page; on WhatsApp or by e-mail you receive a quote within a minute. You pay in the vehicle (cash, or card if agreed), with no prepayment, no night surcharge and no luggage fee, and cancellation is free. Free child seats are available if you tell us the children's ages. More on the area is on our Fethiye transfers page and the general airport transfer page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which airport should I fly into for Fethiye?

Dalaman Airport is the usual choice: Fethiye is about 55 km away, around 55 minutes. Antalya Airport also works, but the drive is about 230 km and around 200 minutes.

Are the hotels in Fethiye smaller than in Antalya?

Generally, yes. The Antalya region has many large all-inclusive resorts, while Fethiye's hotels tend to be smaller in scale.

Is Fethiye suitable for an active holiday?

Many visitors go for that reason: paragliding from Babadağ, Saklıkent gorge, island boat trips and the Lycian Way, which starts near Ölüdeniz.

Can I stay in Antalya and then move to Fethiye?

Yes. We can drive you hotel to hotel, and you can fly home from Dalaman so you do not need to go back to Antalya.

Which vehicle suits a group of nine?

A Mercedes Sprinter, which carries 8 to 16 passengers. The price is per vehicle, not per person.

Is there an extra charge if my flight lands late?

Is the transfer private or shared?
