Antalya or Alanya: Which to Choose for Your Stay

Antalya and Alanya share a coastline and an airport, yet a week in each feels quite different. One is a large city with an old quarter and beaches on its doorstep; the other is a resort town wrapped around a castle hill. Here is how they compare on beaches, things to do, evenings and the drive from the airport.

First, which Antalya are we talking about?

People say "Antalya" for the whole province, which stretches from Kemer to beyond Alanya. In this comparison, Antalya means the city itself and the districts around it: the walled old town of Kaleiçi, the long city beach at Konyaaltı to the west, and the resort strip at Lara to the east. Alanya is a separate town much further along the coast to the east, with its own character and its own nearby airport.

That distinction matters, because the choice is really between staying in or next to a working city and staying in a holiday town built around a historic peninsula. Both have beaches, both have history, and both can work for almost any kind of traveller. The differences are in the details.

City streets versus a castle on the rock

In Antalya, history sits inside daily city life. Kaleiçi is a maze of narrow lanes inside the old walls, sloping down to the old harbour, and you enter it through Hadrian's Gate, a Roman arch that still stands on a busy street. The Antalya Museum is devoted to archaeology, and the Düden waterfalls are within the city. Add shopping malls and the general bustle of a big town, and Antalya suits people who like to wander, browse and eat out somewhere new each night.

Alanya is shaped by its landmark: a castle on a rocky peninsula that rises above the town and harbour. At the foot of it, by the water, stands the Red Tower (Kızıl Kule). The Damlataş cave is close to the beach on the western side. Everything has a more holiday-town feel, with the harbour as the natural meeting point and boat trips leaving from it.

If you want a deeper look at the city side, our three-day Antalya city break lays out a practical plan.

Beaches: sand, pebbles and a promenade

Antalya gives you two very different beaches depending on which side of the city you stay:

  • Konyaaltı is a long pebble and shingle city beach with a promenade behind it and mountains on the horizon. It feels urban in a pleasant way, with walkers and cyclists along the front.
  • Lara is sandy and lined with big resorts, so it suits travellers who want a beach-and-pool routine without leaving the hotel much.

Alanya's famous stretch is Cleopatra Beach, a sandy beach on the west side of the castle, and the town has other long sandy beaches running along its coast. If soft sand is essential, both Lara and Alanya deliver; if you prefer pebbles and a city promenade, Konyaaltı is the one to look at.

Our guide to where to stay in Lara, Konyaaltı and Kaleiçi compares the city districts in more depth.

Evenings and the general pace

Evenings in Antalya depend on your district. In Kaleiçi there are restaurants and bars tucked into old houses and courtyards; along Konyaaltı, life moves to the promenade at sunset; in Lara, many guests stay within their resort. It is a city, so there is always something open somewhere, but it does not feel like a single party zone.

Alanya tends to have livelier evenings centred on the town and harbour area. For travellers who want to step out of the hotel and find music and crowds within walking distance, that can be a plus. For those wanting silence, choosing a hotel slightly away from the centre helps.

Arrival day: one airport or two

This is where the two places differ most clearly.

  • Antalya city is right next to Antalya Airport (AYT). Lara is around 20 minutes away, Kaleiçi about 25 and Konyaaltı about 35. You can land, collect your bags and be at the hotel well within the hour.
  • Alanya is about 125 km from AYT, which takes around two hours. However, Gazipaşa-Alanya Airport (GZP) is only about 40 km away, roughly 50 minutes by road. If a flight into Gazipaşa fits your plans, the arrival drive becomes short.

Both routes have their own pages with the live price table: Antalya Airport to Alanya and Gazipaşa Airport to Alanya. For the longer drive in detail, see the complete AYT to Alanya transfer guide.

Matching each place to your group

  • Short breaks and first visits: Antalya city makes sense when time is tight, since the airport run is quick and the old town, museum and waterfalls are all close by.
  • Families wanting sand: Lara on the Antalya side or Alanya's sandy beaches both fit. Lara is closer to AYT; Alanya is close to GZP.
  • Couples who like strolling and eating out: Kaleiçi's lanes and harbour, or Alanya's harbour front with the castle above, each offer that kind of evening.
  • Groups of friends after a lively night: Alanya's town centre is the more obvious choice.
  • History lovers: both work. Antalya has Hadrian's Gate, the old harbour and the museum; Alanya has its castle, the Red Tower and the cave.

Why not split the trip?

Plenty of visitors do a few nights in the city and the rest of the week in Alanya, or the other way round. The drive between the two is the same coast road, and a private vehicle can take you from one hotel door to the other with all your luggage. Our article on a two-centre holiday with a hotel change explains how to plan that switch so it eats as little of your holiday as possible.

Booking your transfer to either one

Whichever you pick, our transfers are private: the vehicle carries only your party and goes straight to your hotel without stopping at others. Your driver tracks the flight, waits at arrivals with a name sign, and does not charge for waiting if the flight is late.

The price is fixed per vehicle rather than per person, with no night surcharge and no luggage fee. You do not pay in advance; you pay in the vehicle, and cancellation is free. Choose a Minivan for up to 6 people, a VIP Mercedes-Benz Vito for up to 7, or a Mercedes Sprinter for 8 to 16. Child seats are free; just tell us the children's ages. Send your flight and hotel on WhatsApp or by e-mail and you will have a quote within a minute.

For more on Alanya's districts, see the Alanya transfer page; for the old town, the Kaleiçi transfer page.
