Kemer or Lara: Mountains and Pebbles vs Sand and the City

Kemer and Lara sit on opposite sides of Antalya and feel like two different holidays. One has pine-covered mountains dropping to pebble beaches; the other has a long sandy shore a short ride from the airport and the city. This guide sets out the trade-offs so you can match the area to your group rather than to a brochure.

Two sides of Antalya, two moods

Picture Antalya as a wide bay with the city in the middle. Lara lies on the eastern side, close to the airport, where the land is flat and the shore is one long stretch of sand lined with large resorts. Kemer lies to the west and south-west, where the Taurus mountains come straight down to the water and the coast road winds between pine forest and the sea.

Neither area is the right answer for everyone. The question is what your days should look like: a sandy beach with the city a short drive away, or a greener, more mountainous setting with a string of villages to explore. Below, each point is weighed from both sides.

Sand or pebbles: what the beach feels like

For many travellers this is the deciding factor, so it comes first.

  • Lara: a long sandy beach. Toddlers can dig, older children can build, and walking barefoot along the waterline is easy. If you picture a classic soft-sand beach, Lara gives you that.
  • Kemer: mostly pebble and shingle beaches. Many visitors like the clear look of the water over pebbles, and you do not carry sand back to the room. Water shoes make getting in more comfortable, especially for children.

If sand is non-negotiable for your family, that alone may settle it. If the backdrop matters more than the texture underfoot, keep reading.

The scenery and what is on the doorstep

Around Kemer the landscape is the attraction. Mountains rise behind the hotels, pine forest reaches almost to the shore, and Kemer town has a marina where evening walks usually end. The coast is a chain of villages; from north to south they run Beldibi, Göynük, Kemer, Kiriş, Çamyuva and Tekirova, each with its own pace. Close by are the Tahtalı cable car, which climbs to a summit high above the coast, and the ancient harbour city of Phaselis, where ruins sit beside small bays. Our guide to the Kemer villages helps if you are unsure which one to pick.

Around Lara the attraction is convenience. Many hotels are large themed all-inclusive resorts, and the city is right there: Kaleiçi, the old town around the historic harbour, plus shopping streets and malls are a short drive away. At the edge of Lara, the lower Düden waterfall drops straight off the cliffs into the sea, a sight worth the short trip.

Matching the area to your group

A few typical travellers and where they tend to feel at home:

  • Families with small children who want the shortest possible journey: Lara. Twenty minutes from arrivals to the hotel is hard to beat after a long flight, and the beach is sand.
  • Couples who like walking, views and a calmer evening: Kemer, particularly the villages away from Kemer town, where evenings tend to be quieter.
  • Shoppers and city explorers: Lara, because Kaleiçi and the shops are close enough for a half-day visit without planning.
  • Active travellers and day-trippers: Kemer, with the cable car, Phaselis and the coast villages within easy reach.
  • Groups with mixed tastes: look at Konyaaltı, described below, as a compromise.

Arrival day: the transfer time compared

The difference in drive time is real and worth factoring in, especially on a late or early flight.

From Antalya Airport (AYT) to Lara the private transfer covers about 14 km and takes around 20 minutes. You can be at the hotel before some fellow passengers have collected their bags. The route page Antalya Airport to Lara shows the live price per vehicle, and our Lara and Kundu transfer guide goes into the details.

To Kemer the drive is about 58 km and around 70 minutes. The road crosses the city and then follows the coast west, with mountains on one side and the sea on the other; Beldibi is the first Kemer village you reach, so hotels there are a little closer. Tekirova, at the southern end, adds more time. Prices are on Antalya Airport to Kemer.

Seventy minutes is not long, but with a baby or after a night flight it is worth knowing in advance. The same applies in reverse on departure day: leave Kemer earlier than you would leave Lara.

The middle ground: Konyaaltı

If you cannot decide, Konyaaltı is worth a look. It is the city beach on Antalya's western side, between Lara and Kemer both on the map and in character. You get the mountain views across the bay that Kemer is known for, while staying inside the city with Kaleiçi close by. The transfer from the airport is about 27 km and roughly 35 minutes, because the drive crosses the city from the airport on the eastern edge. Our Konyaaltı and city centre transfer guide explains the route.

How the transfer works to either area

Whichever side of Antalya you choose, the private transfer works the same way. Your driver waits in arrivals with a name sign and follows your flight, so a delay costs you nothing extra. The vehicle carries only your group, straight to your hotel without stops at other hotels.

  • Price fixed per vehicle, not per person, quoted within a minute on WhatsApp or by e-mail.
  • No prepayment: pay in the vehicle, in cash or by card if agreed when booking. Free cancellation.
  • No night surcharge and no luggage fee.
  • Free child seats on request; tell us the children's ages.
  • Minivan for 1-6 passengers, VIP Mercedes-Benz Vito for 1-7, Mercedes Sprinter for 8-16.
