Bodrum Castle Transfer: Private Car from Bodrum Airport

The castle was built from the early 15th century by the Knights Hospitaller of Rhodes, who named it after St Peter. To raise its walls they reused stone from the ruined Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and you can still spot carved marble blocks in the masonry. Its towers carry names such as the English, French, Italian and German towers, and the walls are decorated with the knights’ coats of arms.

Today the castle is home to the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology, one of the most important museums of its kind. Its halls display finds from ancient shipwrecks off the Turkish coast, including the Late Bronze Age Uluburun wreck, along with amphorae, glass and cargo raised from the seabed. From the battlements the views over the marina and the white town are superb.

From Milas-Bodrum Airport (BJV) the castle is about 36 km by road, roughly 40 minutes depending on traffic. The main road crosses the hills of the peninsula and comes down into Bodrum town.

From Gümbet and Bitez the drive is short; from Ortakent, Turgutreis, Yalıkavak, Gündoğan, Türkbükü or Torba it takes longer, as the roads wind around the peninsula. The castle sits in the pedestrian heart of the old town by the harbour, so cars cannot drive up to the gate. Your driver drops you at the nearest convenient point on the waterfront road and picks you up there again; from there it is a short walk along the harbour to the entrance. In high summer traffic in the town centre can be slow, especially in the evening.

The castle has many steps, ramps and uneven stone paths, so wear comfortable shoes. In summer the courtyards get hot: come in the morning or later in the afternoon, and bring water and a hat. Allow two to three hours to see the towers and the museum halls without rushing.

The castle combines easily with other well-known sights in town:

• the site of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, a short walk inland;
• the ancient theatre on the hillside above the town, with wide views of the bay;
• the Myndos Gate, part of the old city walls;
• the windmills on the ridge between Bodrum and Gümbet, popular at sunset;
• the marina, the bazaar streets and the waterfront promenade.
