The ancient theatre at a glance
Bodrum stands on the site of ancient Halicarnassus, the city of King Mausolus. Its theatre was built into the slope above the town in the 4th century BC and enlarged in Roman times. Rows of stone seats rise up the hill, and from the top you look straight down over the town, the bay, the marina and Bodrum Castle on its rocky point.
The theatre lies right beside the main road that leads out of Bodrum towards Gümbet and Turgutreis, so it is one of the easiest ancient sites on the peninsula to reach. It has at times been used for concerts and events; for current visiting information, check locally before you go.

Getting there from the airport and the resorts
From Milas-Bodrum Airport the theatre is about 36 km, roughly 40 minutes by road along the main highway onto the peninsula and into Bodrum town.
- From Bodrum centre: a short ride up the hill.
- From Gümbet and Bitez: a few minutes over the hill on the main road.
- From Ortakent and Turgutreis: east along the peninsula road.
- From Yalıkavak, Gündoğan and Türkbükü: across the peninsula from the north coast.
- From Torba: a short drive along the bay into town.
The road beside the theatre is busy, so the driver drops you at the nearest safe point by the entrance. In summer Bodrum's streets fill up in the evening; allow some extra time.
Planning your visit
The theatre faces the sun and the stone seats get hot in summer, so the morning or the late afternoon is more comfortable than midday. The late afternoon light over the castle and the bay is especially good for photos. Bring water, a hat and shoes with grip, as the old steps are uneven.
Easy to combine in one Bodrum day:
- the remains of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world
- the Myndos Gate, part of the old city walls
- Bodrum Castle and its Museum of Underwater Archaeology
- the marina and the seafront promenade
