The Mausoleum at a glance
Ancient Halicarnassus is today's Bodrum. In the 4th century BC a monumental tomb was built here for Mausolus, the ruler of Caria, completed after his death under his wife Artemisia. It was so famous that the word “mausoleum” comes from his name, and it is counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
The tomb stood for many centuries before earthquakes brought it down. Much of its stone was later reused by the Knights of St John to build Bodrum Castle, and many of its sculptures are now in the British Museum in London. What you see on site today:
- the foundations and the cut rock of the burial area;
- scattered column drums and architectural fragments in a quiet garden;
- models and panels showing how the monument may once have looked.

Getting to the Mausoleum from Milas-Bodrum Airport and the resorts
From Milas-Bodrum Airport (BJV) the site is about 36 km by road, roughly 40 minutes depending on traffic. The main road crosses the hills of the peninsula and comes down into Bodrum town.
The Mausoleum is in the old centre, in narrow streets just above the harbour. From Gümbet and Bitez it is a short drive; from Turgutreis, Yalıkavak, Gündoğan or Torba allow more time, especially on busy summer evenings. Traffic and parking in central Bodrum can be difficult, so your driver drops you at the entrance or the nearest accessible point and agrees a pick-up spot with you.
Planning your visit
The site itself is compact, so a visit is quick and easy to combine with a stroll through Bodrum town. In summer it gets very hot in the middle of the day: come in the morning or in the late afternoon, and bring a hat, sunscreen and water. Comfortable shoes help on the cobbled streets around the harbour.
Well-known sights within walking distance or a short drive:
- Bodrum Castle (Castle of St Peter) on the harbour, home of the Museum of Underwater Archaeology;
- the ancient theatre of Halicarnassus on the hillside above the town, with views over the bay;
- the Myndos Gate, a restored section of the old city walls;
- the marina, the bazaar streets and the seafront of Bodrum.
