The journey starts on Antalya's sandy east side and ends near the western tip of the Lycian coast. After crossing the city, you head south-west past Kemer, then through Kumluca, Finike and Demre, and finally via Kaş to Kalkan. The distance is about 227 km and the drive typically takes around 3 hours 40 minutes.

Plan it as a half-day trip. Crossing Antalya is quickest outside rush hours, and in high summer traffic near Kemer can slow things down. In return, the second half of the route offers wide sea views, mountain slopes and small coastal towns.

Many guests combine a few relaxed days on Lara's beach with a longer stay in Kalkan, a pretty village of white houses above a small harbour, known for its rooftop terraces and villas with private pools. To make the change smooth:

• Choose a pick-up time that fits your hotel's check-out; a morning start brings you to Kalkan in the afternoon
• If you are staying in a villa, agree your arrival time with the owner or key holder beforehand
• All suitcases travel with you in one vehicle; on steep, narrow lanes the driver stops at the nearest accessible point

For hotels, rooms are usually ready in the afternoon; ask about a luggage room if you expect to arrive early.
