Çeşme Castle Transfer: How to Get There by Private Car

The castle was built in the early 16th century, in the reign of Sultan Bayezid II, to guard the strait between Çeşme and the Greek island of Chios. Its stone walls and towers rise straight from the town centre, a few steps from the sea. Inside, the castle is used as a museum area with historic finds and displays.

In front of the castle stands the statue of Cezayirli Gazi Hasan Pasha with a lion, and next to it the Ottoman caravanserai of the 16th century. The harbour, where ferries leave for Chios, and the shopping street are right around the corner, so the castle is the natural heart of a visit to Çeşme town.

From İzmir Airport the castle is about 85 km, roughly 1 hour 10 minutes by road, mostly on the İzmir–Çeşme motorway to the end of the peninsula.

The streets around the castle are busy and partly pedestrian, so your driver drops you and picks you up at the nearest accessible point by the square and the harbour.

The walls and towers have stairs and uneven stone, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water and a hat. In summer the morning is coolest; in the late afternoon the sea breeze picks up and the light on the harbour is lovely. A visit usually takes about an hour.

Afterwards you can stroll the shopping street of Çeşme, sit by the marina or the harbour, and in the evening drive to Alaçatı with its stone houses and windmills. Ilıca Beach with its shallow water is close by for a swim.
