Pirate boats are a classic of the Turkish Riviera: wooden gulets dressed up with masts, flags and decorations, sailing out from the harbours of Antalya and the nearby resorts. The aim of the day is simple fun at sea. The boat cruises along the coast, anchors in bays for swimming and, between stops, the crew keeps the mood going with music, games and the well-known foam party on deck.

Around Antalya city the coast is lined with high limestone cliffs, and boats leaving the old harbour below Kaleiçi often follow them; some routes pass the Lower Düden Waterfall, where the river drops straight into the sea. Boats from Kemer, Side or Alanya sail along their own stretch of coast with pine-covered bays and beaches.

The whole trip takes about 6 to 7 hours including transfers. A typical day:

• Morning pickup from your hotel and the drive to the departure harbour, usually the one closest to your resort area.
• Boarding and departure along the coast.
• Two or three swim breaks in bays, depending on sea conditions, with time to jump off the boat or relax on deck.
• A break for a meal on board, as arranged by the boat team.
• Music, games and the foam party on deck, usually on the way back.
• Return to the harbour in the afternoon and the drive back to your hotel.

The exact route and the swimming spots are decided on the day by the captain, according to the wind and the sea.

• Bring swimwear, a towel, sun cream, a hat and sunglasses; wear clothes you do not mind getting wet.
• Foam can sting the eyes: swimming goggles help, especially for children. If anyone has sensitive skin, rinse off afterwards.
• Children should wear life jackets when swimming and be supervised by an adult at all times, including on deck.
• Older travellers can enjoy the cruise from a quieter corner of the boat; boarding and the swim ladder need a little balance.
• Take your usual seasickness remedy before boarding if you need it.
• Keep phones in a waterproof pouch during the foam party.
• Have some cash for photos or other personal extras offered on board.
