Jeep Safari in the Taurus Mountains from Antalya

The Taurus Mountains rise steeply behind the Antalya coast, and only a short drive inland the landscape changes completely: pine and cedar forest, terraced fields, goats on rocky slopes and small villages where life still follows the seasons. A jeep safari is an easy way to see this side of the region, travelling in 4x4 vehicles on forest roads and gravel tracks that ordinary cars rarely use.

Along the route you will typically stop at viewpoints over valleys and the coast, walk briefly through a mountain village and see rural life up close: bread baked on a griddle, orchards, beehives and old stone houses. Depending on the area, a river or a spring can be part of the route, and the day often has a playful, convoy atmosphere.

The safari suits families, couples and groups of friends who enjoy nature and a bit of adventure without needing any special fitness. It is a good choice for a day off the beach and gives a very different picture of Turkey than the resort towns.

The tour takes about 7 to 8 hours in total. A typical day:

• Morning pickup from your hotel and the transfer to the safari starting point at the edge of the mountains, usually in the area closest to your resort.
• Change to the safari jeeps, driven by the safari team, and the first off-road stages on dirt and forest tracks.
• Stops at panoramic viewpoints and in one or more Taurus villages.
• A break for a meal in a rural setting, as arranged on the day.
• The return drive down to the coast in the afternoon and drop-off at your hotel.

The exact route depends on your resort area, the season and the condition of the tracks, and is decided by the safari team.

• The tracks are dusty in summer. Wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty and bring sunglasses and a scarf or buff for your face.
• A hat and sun cream are essential, as the jeeps are often open. In spring and autumn bring a light jacket for the higher sections.
• Comfortable closed shoes are best for village walks on uneven ground.
• Parts of the route are bumpy. The safari is not recommended for people with back or neck problems or during pregnancy; small children should sit with an adult.
• Follow the instructions of the safari drivers and stay seated while the vehicles are moving.
• Bring a camera: the viewpoints and the villages are among the best photo spots of the day. Ask before photographing villagers.
• Keep some cash for small purchases in the villages.
