Green Canyon Boat Tour on Oymapınar Lake, Manavgat

The Green Canyon (Yeşil Kanyon) lies inland from Manavgat, where the Manavgat River was dammed in the 1980s to create the Oymapınar reservoir. The lake filled a deep valley in the Taurus Mountains, and its northern arm narrows into a canyon with steep limestone walls covered in pine and wild olive. The water takes its colour from the minerals and the surrounding forest and shifts from jade to deep green depending on the light.

The day is a calm one: a slow cruise along the reservoir, time to look at the cliffs and the forest, a stop to swim in fresh water and a break for a meal. Compared with sea trips there are no waves, which many families with small children and travellers prone to seasickness appreciate.

The tour suits families, couples, older travellers and anyone who would like a change from the beach and a cooler mountain setting in the hot months. No special fitness is needed.

The whole trip takes about 8 to 9 hours door to door. A typical day:

• Morning pickup from your hotel and the drive towards Manavgat and up into the hills. From Side and Manavgat it is a short trip; from Alanya, Belek, Lara or Antalya city the drive is longer, up to around two hours each way from the furthest areas.
• Boarding at the lake pier and a cruise through the reservoir into the Green Canyon.
• A swimming stop in the lake, if the weather allows; the water is fresh and often cooler than the sea.
• A break for a meal, on board or at a lakeside spot, as arranged on the day.
• Return to the pier in the afternoon and the drive back to your hotel.

On the way some programmes include a short stop in Manavgat, for example at the waterfall or the town; this depends on the day and is not guaranteed.

• Wear light clothes and comfortable shoes, and bring swimwear, a towel, sun cream, a hat and sunglasses. The sun on the open deck is strong.
• A light layer is useful in spring and autumn: it can be fresher on the lake than on the coast.
• The lake is deep right from the shore. Children and weak swimmers should use life jackets and stay close to an adult.
• Older travellers usually find this tour easy; boarding the boat needs only a little care.
• Bring a camera or phone: the narrow parts of the canyon and the reflections on the water make good photos.
• Keep some cash for personal extras.
