Selçuk is a small, friendly town in the green Küçük Menderes valley, inland from the Aegean coast in İzmir province. It is best known as the gateway to ancient Ephesus, one of the largest and best-preserved Greco-Roman cities in the Mediterranean, whose marble streets, Library of Celsus and great theatre lie just outside town. On the hill above the centre stand the Basilica of St John and the castle, and a single column marks the site of the Temple of Artemis, once one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Visitors who stay in Selçuk itself are mostly travellers interested in history: couples, families on a cultural trip, pilgrims and groups who want to see Ephesus early in the morning before the crowds. The town has a relaxed feel, with a weekly market, tea gardens and storks nesting on the old aqueduct.

The route is about 55 km and usually takes around 50 minutes. From the airport, south of İzmir, the car joins the motorway heading south, crosses farmland and low hills and leaves it for the short final stretch into the valley of Selçuk. It is an easy, well-signposted drive, and traffic is rarely a problem outside the city.

When you come out of baggage claim, your driver is waiting in the arrivals hall with a name sign and helps you with your luggage. We track your flight, so if you land early or late the pick-up time moves with it and there is no charge for waiting on delays. A late-night landing costs the same as a daytime one, and extra suitcases or a pushchair carry no luggage fee.

Selçuk is compact, and most places to stay are within a few minutes of each other:

• The town centre – small hotels and family-run guesthouses near the station, the aqueduct and the restaurants.
• Below the castle hill – quieter streets with pensions and boutique houses close to the Basilica of St John.
• The countryside around town – farmhouses and small hotels among olive groves and fields, and the hill village of Şirince just above the valley.

Selçuk is an ideal base for some of the best-known sights in western Turkey:

• Ephesus – the ancient city with the Library of Celsus, the terrace houses and the great theatre.
• House of the Virgin Mary – the small stone chapel on Bülbül Mountain above Ephesus, a place of pilgrimage.
• Basilica of St John and the Temple of Artemis – both within walking distance of the centre.
• Şirince – a hillside village with old houses, fruit wines and village cafés.
• Kuşadası – the cruise port and beaches on the coast nearby.

The ride back to the airport takes about 50 minutes. Plan to be at the airport 2 to 3 hours before an international flight — check your airline's advice. For a 13:00 flight, for example, a pick-up in Selçuk at around 09:30 gives you a comfortable margin. The driver collects you from the same place where you were dropped off.
