Side East Beach Transfer: How to Get There by Private Car

Side is one of the few places on the Turkish Riviera where a beach day and an ancient city share the same few hundred metres. The old town sits on a small peninsula, and the East Beach begins at its southern tip, next to the standing columns of the Temple of Apollo, before stretching east along the bay towards Sorgun. The sand is soft and the sea opens out to the horizon, with the Taurus Mountains in the distance.

Behind the beach you are a short walk from the harbour, the restaurants and shops of the old town, the great Roman theatre and the city gates. Many visitors swim in the morning and explore the ruins later, or watch the sunset at the temple.

From Antalya Airport (AYT) Side is about 65 km away, roughly 1 hour 25 minutes by road. The route follows the D400 coastal highway east past Kundu and Belek, then turns off towards Side and the old town.

Traffic inside Side's old town is restricted, so your driver drops you at the nearest accessible point at the edge of the old town or by the beach road, and picks you up there again. From the hotels west of Side — Kumköy, Çolaklı and Evrenseki — the drive is short; from Sorgun, Titreyengöl and Manavgat to the east it is only minutes. From Belek allow a little longer, and from Alanya it is a longer drive along the coast.

In July and August the sand gets very hot by midday, so come early in the morning or after mid-afternoon. A good plan is to swim first, have lunch in the shade of the old town, then visit the ruins as the heat drops and stay for sunset at the Temple of Apollo.

• Bring sunscreen, a hat and water; there is little shade on the open sand.
• Wear comfortable shoes for the ancient city — the paving is uneven.
• Keep a little cash for cafés and small purchases.

Side combines easily with the Manavgat Waterfall, a short drive inland, and with the Roman theatre of Aspendos on the way back towards Belek or the airport.
