The tour at a glance

Termessos lies about 30 kilometres northwest of Antalya, at more than 1,000 metres on the slopes of Güllük Dağı, inside a protected national park. It was a city of the Pisidians, a proud mountain people, and its position was so strong that Alexander the Great gave up his attempt to take it in 333 BC. Unlike the coastal sites, Termessos was never rebuilt over, so its ruins sit wild among pine and oak trees.

The best-known sight is the theatre, perched on the edge of a cliff with a view across the mountains towards the coast. Along the way you see city walls, the agora with its large cisterns, the remains of temples and the gymnasium, and a vast hillside necropolis with stone sarcophagi scattered among the trees.

The second part of the day is the Düden Waterfalls, where the Düden River tumbles through a green park on the edge of the city. It is a pleasant, shady stop after the mountain walk. The tour suits travellers interested in history and nature who have only part of a day available.

How the day runs

The whole tour takes about 6 hours including transfers. A typical flow:

  • Morning pickup from your hotel and the drive inland to the national park.
  • A short climb by vehicle up the mountain road to the parking area below the ruins.
  • The walk through Termessos: walls, agora and cisterns, the theatre and the necropolis, with the main highlights explained.
  • The drive back down towards Antalya and a stop at the Düden Waterfalls park.
  • Return to your hotel in the afternoon.

The order of the stops may change depending on the time of day and traffic; morning visits to Termessos are cooler.

Good to know

  • Termessos involves a steep uphill walk on rough, rocky paths; wear sturdy closed shoes with a good grip.
  • Bring water, a hat and sun cream; much of the path is shaded by trees, but the theatre and upper areas are exposed.
  • The site is cooler than the coast because of its altitude, which makes it pleasant in summer.
  • Older travellers and anyone with limited mobility can stop at the lower areas and still enjoy the setting; the full walk needs reasonable fitness.
  • Children enjoy exploring the ruins, but keep them close near cliff edges and open cisterns.
  • The Düden park is easy to walk, with paths and viewpoints near the falls; the spray can be refreshing.

What is included (entrance tickets, meals, equipment) is confirmed when you book.
