The tour at a glance
Termessos lies at more than 1,000 metres on the slopes of Güllük Dağı, about 30 kilometres from Antalya. It was a Pisidian city, proud and hard to reach, and is famous for resisting Alexander the Great, who besieged it in 333 BC and moved on without taking it. Later it kept its independence as an ally of Rome and filled its narrow mountain terrace with public buildings.
Unlike the coastal sites, Termessos has been left largely unrestored and wrapped in pine and oak forest. On the walk you pass sections of city walls, the agora with its large underground cisterns, the remains of a gymnasium and an odeon, and several necropolis areas with hundreds of carved sarcophagi scattered among the rocks. The highlight is the theatre, perched on the edge of a cliff: from its upper rows the view opens across the mountains and down towards the Antalya plain and the sea on clear days.
The site is part of a protected national park, and wild goats and birds of prey are often seen. The tour suits travellers who like history, walking and quieter places away from the busiest sights.
Booking
How the day runs
The trip takes about 6 to 7 hours door to door. A typical flow:
- Morning pickup from your hotel and the drive inland towards the national park. From Antalya city, Konyaaltı or Lara it is short; from Kemer or Belek it is moderate; from Side or Alanya it is a longer drive each way.
- Entry to the national park and the drive up the winding forest road to the upper car park.
- The hike: a rocky, uneven mountain trail that climbs to the main ruins. Reaching the theatre takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes at a steady pace, and exploring the site takes two to three hours in total.
- Time at the theatre viewpoint and among the tombs and cisterns.
- Return down the trail and the drive back to your hotel.
The route on site and the time spent at each area adapt to the group's pace and the weather.
Good to know
- Wear proper walking shoes or trail shoes with good grip; the paths are steep, stony and uneven in places.
- Bring plenty of water, a hat and sun cream. There is little shade near the theatre, and summer afternoons are hot even at altitude.
- Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons; in summer an early start is best.
- A light layer is useful outside summer, as it can be cooler and windy up on the mountain.
- Good basic fitness is needed. The walk is not suitable for pushchairs or for travellers with walking difficulties; children who are used to walking usually enjoy it.
- Stay on the paths and keep away from cliff edges and open cisterns.
- Bring a camera: the theatre setting is one of the most photographed views in the region.
