Köprülü Canyon Rafting Tour from Antalya, Belek & Side

Köprülü Canyon lies in the Taurus Mountains north of Belek and Manavgat and has been a national park since 1973. The Köprüçay river, known in antiquity as the Eurymedon, runs through a gorge of limestone cliffs and old pine and cypress forest. Its water comes from mountain springs, so it stays cool and clear even in midsummer.

The canyon takes its name, "bridged canyon", from the Roman Oluk Bridge, a single stone arch from around the 2nd century AD that still spans the gorge on the old road up to the ancient city of Selge. Many rafting days pass near it or include a short look.

The rafting stretch is known for mostly moderate rapids with calmer sections in between, which is why it is a popular first rafting experience. Between the rapids there is usually time to float, splash and, where the guides allow it, swim in the river. The tour suits active families, couples and groups of friends who want a fun outdoor day away from the beach.

The tour takes about 8 hours in total. A typical day:

• Morning pickup from your hotel and the drive into the mountains. From Belek, Side and Manavgat the canyon is roughly an hour or a little more away; from Antalya city, Lara, Alanya or Kemer allow more time.
• Arrival at the rafting base by the river, changing and a safety briefing from the rafting team.
• The descent of the river by raft, in sections, with stops on the way.
• A break for a meal by the river, as arranged by the rafting base.
• Time to dry off and change, then the drive back to your hotel in the afternoon.

The length of the descent depends on the water level and the season and is set by the rafting team on the day.

• Wear swimwear under your clothes and bring a towel and a full change of dry clothes for the drive home.
• Shoes that stay on your feet in water are best, such as sports sandals with straps or old trainers; flip-flops come off easily.
• Use waterproof sun cream: the reflection from the water is strong. A strap for your glasses is useful.
• Safety equipment and the briefing are provided by the rafting operator's team. Listen carefully and follow the instructors' instructions in the raft and in the water.
• The minimum age for children depends on the operator and the water level and is confirmed when you book. Travellers with back, heart or mobility problems or who are pregnant should think carefully before joining.
• Leave valuables at the hotel. Phones are best kept in a waterproof pouch, or left in the vehicle.
