Aspendos Theatre Guide: Roman Stage, Aqueduct & How to Get There

Aspendos is one of the best-preserved Roman theatres in the world, built in the 2nd century AD and standing inland near Serik, between Antalya and Side. It is a short drive from Belek and a bit longer from Side, so a private car there and back is the easiest way to visit by day or for an evening performance.

What Aspendos is and where you find it

Aspendos was a city of ancient Pamphylia, the fertile plain that stretches along the coast east of Antalya. Today the site lies inland, near the town of Serik and close to the Köprüçay river, which the ancient Greeks called the Eurymedon. On the map it sits roughly between Antalya and Side, a little behind the resort strip of Belek.

Most visitors come for one reason: the theatre. While many ancient theatres in Türkiye are partly ruined, Aspendos still has its full stage building, its seating and much of its original shape. Walking in through the stage entrance and looking up at the tiers is one of those moments that stays with people long after the holiday.

The site is not huge, so you do not need a full day. Many guests spend a relaxed couple of hours here and then continue to the coast, to another ancient city or back to the hotel pool.

The theatre: what to look at

The theatre was built in the 2nd century AD, in the time of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, and is linked with the architect Zenon. It was built against a hillside, which is part of the reason it survived so well. Things worth noticing once you are inside:

  • The stage building (scaenae frons): the tall back wall behind the stage is still standing to almost its full height, with rows of openings and traces of decoration. This is rare and is what makes Aspendos special.
  • The seating: the semicircle of stone rows rises steeply, with a vaulted gallery running around the top. Climb up a few rows and look back at the stage for the classic photo.
  • The acoustics: the theatre is famous for how well sound carries. Stand in the middle of the stage and speak normally while a friend listens from higher up.
  • Later history: in the Seljuk period the building was used as a caravanserai, one more reason it was kept in repair instead of being taken apart for stone.

Wear comfortable shoes with grip: the stone steps are high and can be smooth after centuries of feet.

The aqueduct and the hill behind the theatre

Aspendos was more than a theatre. On the hill behind it lay the upper city with its public buildings, and the remains are scattered and less restored. If you have time and the heat allows, a short walk gives you good views over the plain.

The other highlight is the Roman aqueduct a little north of the theatre. Its long line of stone arches once carried water across the plain to the city, and it is considered one of the better-preserved aqueducts in the region. You can see it from the road, and with a private car it is easy to ask for a short photo stop. It is a quiet spot compared with the theatre and gives a good sense of Roman engineering.

The Köprüçay (Eurymedon) river and the Seljuk bridge

On the way to the theatre you cross or pass the Köprüçay river. Near the site stands an old Seljuk bridge, built in the medieval period on the foundations of an earlier Roman bridge. Its slightly zig-zag shape is unusual and makes it a nice short photo stop.

The river area is also known for simple riverside restaurants, where trout and other local dishes are served under the trees. It is a pleasant place for lunch after the theatre, especially on a hot day. Further upstream, the same river runs through the Köprülü Canyon area, popular for rafting, which some visitors combine with Aspendos as a full-day outing.

Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival: evening plans

The theatre is still used for performances. The best known is the Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival, when opera and ballet are staged in the ancient setting. Seeing a performance there under the evening sky is an experience many travellers plan their trip around.

Performances take place in the evening, which affects your transport:

  • Plan the return before you go. After the show, hundreds of people leave at the same time and taxis can be hard to find on the rural roads around the site.
  • Book both directions together. With a private transfer you agree the pickup time at the hotel and the pickup after the show when you book, and the price for the vehicle is fixed in advance.
  • Bring a light layer and a cushion. Stone seats stay hard, and evenings can feel cooler than the beach afternoon.

Check the festival programme and ticket details with the official organisers before booking your car.

How to get to Aspendos from your hotel

There is no direct rail link, and public transport to the site is not practical for most holidaymakers. The easy options are an organised tour or a private car with a driver.

  • From Belek and Kadriye: Aspendos is a short drive inland, which makes it one of the easiest excursions from Belek hotels.
  • From Side, Kumköy, Çolaklı and Manavgat: a bit longer, but still an easy half-day trip.
  • From Lara, Kundu or Antalya city: the drive runs east along the main coastal road, and Perge is on the way.

Our transfers are private only: one vehicle for your group, with a fixed price per vehicle rather than per person. Families and small groups travel in a Minivan or VIP Mercedes-Benz Vito, and larger groups in a Mercedes Sprinter. Free child seats are available on request. For trip ideas and live prices see our tours page, or ask on WhatsApp.

Combine Aspendos with Perge or Side

Because Aspendos is compact, it pairs well with a second stop:

  • Aspendos and Perge: two very different ancient cities in one morning. Perge has long colonnaded streets and a stadium, Aspendos has the intact theatre. Read our Perge guide for details.
  • Aspendos and Side: theatre in the morning, then the ruins, harbour and Temple of Apollo in Side. See the Side ancient city guide.

In summer, go early in the morning or later in the afternoon, carry water and a hat, and keep the middle of the day for lunch by the river or back at the hotel.
