Car Hire or Private Transfer in Antalya? An Honest Comparison

If you will spend most of your holiday at one resort, a private transfer for the airport legs (plus a car with driver for the odd day out) is usually simpler than a hire car. If you plan to tour the Lycian coast and sleep somewhere different every few nights, renting a car makes more sense.

The short answer

The choice depends less on cost and more on how you plan to spend the week. Ask yourself one question: how many days will the car actually move? If the honest answer is “the arrival day, the departure day and maybe two excursions”, a rental car spends most of its life in the hotel car park while you pay for it. If the answer is “almost every day, because we are moving from Antalya to Kaş to Fethiye”, a hire car gives you freedom that no transfer can match.

Below we go through the practical points travellers tend to underestimate, so you can decide with open eyes. We run private transfers, so we have an obvious interest; that is exactly why we also say clearly when renting is the better option.

Driving straight after a long flight

The first drive of a holiday is often the hardest. You land tired, sometimes late at night, and the rental desk still has paperwork, a vehicle check and a walk to the car park ahead of you. Then you are on unfamiliar roads, with a new car, signs in Turkish and a sat-nav that may not know the hotel's exact entrance.

Distances from Antalya Airport are not huge, but they are not trivial either: Lara is ≈ 14 km (≈ 20 min), Belek ≈ 33 km (≈ 40 min), Side ≈ 65 km (≈ 75 min), Kemer ≈ 58 km (≈ 70 min) and Alanya ≈ 125 km (≈ 120 min). With a private transfer the driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign, the flight is tracked if it is delayed, and you can sleep in the back. Our airport transfer page explains how the pick-up works.

Roads, city traffic and parking

The main coastal road east towards Belek, Side and Alanya and the road west to Kemer are good, dual-carriageway for long stretches. The difficulty is not the highway but everything around it:

  • City traffic in Antalya itself can be slow at rush hour, with busy junctions and roundabouts.
  • Kaleiçi, the old town, has narrow lanes and very limited space for cars; parking nearby is a hunt in summer.
  • Resort hotels usually have parking, but ask your hotel whether it is included and how far it is from the entrance.
  • Navigation works well on main roads, less well in villages and around large hotel zones where several entrances look alike.

None of this is a reason not to drive. It is simply time and attention you spend on the car instead of on the holiday.

Deposits, insurance and fuel

Renting adds some admin that a transfer does not have. Rental companies normally block a deposit on a credit card, and the level of insurance cover, the excess and what counts as damage differ from one company to another. Read the terms before you book, not at the desk at midnight.

Check the rental company's own requirements for driving licences and the minimum age of the driver, and agree the fuel policy (full-to-full or otherwise) in advance. Remember to return the car with enough time for the inspection before your flight home.

With a transfer there is none of this: the price is per vehicle, agreed before the trip and not changed for traffic, night hours or luggage. You pay in the vehicle (cash, or card if agreed in advance), with no prepayment. Live prices for every route are on our prices page.

The mixed approach: transfer + car with driver

Many trips fit neither extreme. A practical middle way:

  1. Book a private transfer for arrival and departure. You can book the return at the same time.
  2. Spend the resort days without a car at all.
  3. For one or two excursions (Perge and Aspendos, the Manavgat waterfall, Kaleiçi, the Tahtalı cable car) book a car with driver for the day and agree pick-up and return times when booking.

That way you never search for parking and nobody in the group has to stay sober to drive back from dinner. Ideas for these days are in our guide to day trips by private car.

When a hire car is the better choice

Be honest with yourself here. Renting is usually the right call if:

  • You are touring the Lycian coast for a week or more, stopping in Kaş, Kalkan, Fethiye and small coves along the way.
  • You enjoy driving and want to stop wherever a view or a village looks interesting.
  • You are staying in a villa or apartment away from the resort strips, where you need a car for shopping every day.
  • You are an experienced driver who is comfortable with local traffic.

Even then, some travellers choose a transfer for the first night, rest, and pick up the rental car in town the next morning. That avoids the late-night desk and the first drive in the dark.

Groups and families tip the balance

Group size changes the maths. A family with two small children, a pushchair and four suitcases needs a large car, and you must bring or rent child seats. Our vehicles are Minivan (1–6 passengers), VIP Mercedes-Benz Vito (1–7) and Mercedes Sprinter (8–16), and child seats are free on request. For a group of ten, one Sprinter keeps everyone together, while renting means two or three cars and drivers who know where they are going. Compare the options in our private transfer vs taxi article as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it cheaper to hire a car or take a private transfer in Antalya?

It depends on how many days you drive. For a resort stay with only airport legs, a transfer often works out simpler once deposit, fuel and parking are counted. For a long road trip, renting usually wins. Compare live transfer prices on our prices page.

Do I need an international driving permit to rent a car in Turkey?

We cannot give legal advice on licences. Check the rental company's own requirements before you book, and ask them directly if your licence is not in Latin script.

Is driving in Antalya difficult?

The main coastal roads are good. City traffic at rush hour, narrow lanes around Kaleiçi and finding the right hotel entrance at night are the parts visitors find tiring.

Can I combine a transfer with a hire car?

Yes. Take a private transfer from the airport, rest, and collect a rental car later in the holiday for the days you want to explore. We can also drive you back to the airport at the end.

Can I book a car with driver for a day trip instead of renting?

Yes. Tell us where you want to go and agree pick-up and return times when booking. For several stops, tell us the plan and we will tell you what is possible.

What if my flight is delayed?

We track the flight and the driver waits for you at no extra charge, with a name sign in the arrivals hall. The price agreed in advance does not change.

Is the transfer private or shared?

All our transfers are 100% private; the vehicle is dedicated to your group only, with no other passengers.

Is the price per person or per vehicle?

The price is per vehicle. One passenger or six pay the same fare in the same vehicle.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

We track your flight live and adjust the pickup time to the new landing time, free of charge.

Is prepayment required?

No, standard bookings need no prepayment; you can pay the driver at the end of the transfer.
