The tour at a glance
Göynük Canyon lies just inland from the resort of Göynük, between Beldibi and Kemer, where the Taurus Mountains rise steeply behind the coast. The Göynük stream flows down from the mountains and, over thousands of years, has carved a deep, narrow canyon into the limestone. Its water is clear and turquoise, and it stays cold even in mid-summer, which makes the canyon one of the most refreshing places on the Kemer coast.
The visit usually starts with a walk on a path along the river, through pine forest and past rock formations, towards the entrance of the gorge. Further in, the walls close in and the river forms natural pools and small cascades where you can cool off, swim or simply sit on the rocks and enjoy the scenery. Looking back, you see the green mountain slopes and, on clear days, the line of the sea.
The day suits active travellers, couples, groups of friends and families with older children who like nature, walking and cold water. It is an outdoor day rather than a sightseeing tour, and how far you go into the canyon is up to you.
Booking
How the day runs
The whole trip takes about 7 hours including transfers. A typical day:
- Morning pickup from your hotel and the drive to Göynük; from Kemer and Beldibi it is short, from Antalya city about an hour, and from Side or Alanya the drive is considerably longer.
- Arrival at the canyon area and preparation for the walk.
- Walk along the river towards the gorge, with stops at viewpoints.
- Time in the canyon: wading and swimming in the pools, relaxing on the rocks, photos.
- Free time for a rest and a meal break in the area.
- Drive back to your hotel in the afternoon.
Water levels change with the season: in spring the stream is stronger and colder, in late summer it is calmer. The exact programme on site depends on these conditions.
Good to know
- Bring swimwear, a towel, sun cream and a change of dry clothes.
- Wear water shoes or sturdy sandals with a good grip: the rocks are slippery and the riverbed is stony.
- The water is cold; people who feel the cold easily should not stay in it too long.
- The path is uneven, with some climbing over rocks. A normal level of fitness is enough, but it is not suitable for people with walking difficulties.
- Any optional activities offered on site are run by the local operator's team: follow the instructors and their safety instructions.
- Children should be supervised by an adult at all times near the water.
- Keep phones and cameras in a waterproof pouch; the canyon is very photogenic.
