The tour at a glance
East of Antalya lies the plain of ancient Pamphylia, where Greek and Roman cities grew rich on trade and farming. This route links its three best-known sites with a river waterfall, so you see a lot of history in one day without the long drives of Pamukkale or Cappadocia. It suits anyone curious about the ancient world, from first-time visitors to families with older children.
- Perge – a large city with a Hellenistic gate flanked by two round towers, a long colonnaded street with a water channel running down its middle, Roman baths, an agora and one of the best-preserved stadiums in Anatolia. The apostle Paul preached here on his first journey.
- Aspendos – home of the most complete Roman theatre in the region, built in the 2nd century AD under Marcus Aurelius. The stage building still stands to its full height and the acoustics remain remarkable; arches of the old aqueduct cross the plain nearby.
- Side and the Temple of Apollo – an ancient harbour town on a small peninsula, where the white columns of the Temple of Apollo stand right at the water's edge. Around them are the theatre, city gates and the lanes of today's Side with its shops and cafés.
- Manavgat Waterfall – not tall but broad, the Manavgat river spills over a wide rock step in a curtain of white water, framed by shady trees.
Booking
How the day runs
Plan on 9 to 10 hours from pickup to drop-off, depending on where your hotel is. A typical day runs like this, with the order adapted to traffic and your hotel's location:
- Pickup from your hotel in the morning and drive to Perge, a short way east of Antalya.
- Walk through Perge: the gate towers, the colonnaded street, the baths and the stadium.
- Drive on to Aspendos to visit the theatre and climb to the upper rows for the view.
- A break for lunch along the route.
- Side: the Temple of Apollo by the sea, the ancient theatre and free time in the old town.
- Manavgat Waterfall for a cool, shady stop before heading back.
- Return drive to your hotel in the evening.
Good to know
The ancient sites are open-air and have little shade, with uneven stones, steps and loose gravel. Wear sturdy, closed shoes and light clothing, bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and plenty of water, especially from June to September when it is very hot at midday. In spring and autumn the light is softer and walking is far more pleasant.
At Aspendos the upper rows are reached by steep stone steps; you can enjoy the theatre just as well from the lower levels. Photography is welcome everywhere; the columns in Side are especially beautiful in the late afternoon light. Children who enjoy exploring usually like the day, and older travellers manage it well at their own pace, choosing how far they walk at each site.
